Oil leaks are damaging – not only to the marine ecosystem, but also, of course, to the reputation of the pumping company involved. Keeping crude oil safely in the pipeline at all times is, therefore, absolutely essential. This process is known in the industry as “blowout prevention”, and the electronics involved are controlled by special switching cabinets – which are installed in extremely tough conditions. Ecodesign regulation 2019/2020/EU, released in 2021, affects the use of fluorescent tubes on the EU/EEA market. Until that time, lighting fixtures in hazardous areas were still permitted as exceptions, but the regulation accelerated the switch to LED technology. With the latest update to the RoHS directive, the exemption for mercury content in fluorescent tubes will expire on August 24, 2023, which means that fluorescent tubes containing mercury may not be placed on the market after that date, even for replacement purposes.
