Ecodesign regulation 2019/2020/EU, released in 2021, affects the use of fluorescent tubes on the EU/EEA market. Until that time, lighting fixtures in hazardous areas were still permitted as exceptions, but the regulation accelerated the switch to LED technology. With the latest update to the RoHS directive, the exemption for mercury content in fluorescent tubes will expire on August 24, 2023, which means that fluorescent tubes containing mercury may not be placed on the market after that date, even for replacement purposes.
Even though the directive affects only fluorescent tubes containing mercury, we can expect shortages to cause disruptions in operations and a drastic shift towards the use of LED lighting fixtures. BARTEC is therefore encouraging its customers to follow the trend, save energy, and use sustainable products.
